Legal Issues 101 is a workshop which provides participants with an overview of current legal and ethical issues commonly encountered with dealing with children who are victims of abuse.   Participants will be able to identify key legal and ethical dilemmas and will be presented with potential legal scenarios and acquire a general framework for accessing possible solutions to commonly encountered situations. Participants include social workers, counselors, psychologists, school counselors, advocacy center staff, law enforcement, and the Department of Family and Children’s Services.  Continuing education units in professional ethics are offered.

Andrew Agatston, JD - An attorney whose personal injury trial practice is limited to four areas: civil claims for crime victims; wrongful death or serious injury cases due to the negligence of others; injuries that result on another’s premises; and automobile collisions. An important part of his practice involves bringing civil claims for victims of crimes, such as those who have been assaulted and battered, or have been victims of molestation or stalking. During the past 17 years, he has tried more than 80 jury trials. Andrew is also the author of “The Legal Eagles of Children’s Advocacy Centers: A Lawyer’s Guide to Soaring in the Courtroom,” and “The Legal Eagles Guide for Children’s Advocacy Centers, Part II:  Soaring Confidently in the Courtroom.”   He has been SafePath’s lawyer since 1999, and currently serves as legal counsel to four other children’s advocacy centers and numerous counselors in private practice.
